De meeste mensen zijn andere mensen.

June 2015

I always lived in Rotterdam, but i moved a lot. When my surroundings changed from unilateral in Hillegersberg to multilateral in the centre i became conscious about preconceptions i have had about islamic woman en man. The title “the most people are other people”, that i could see from my window on a building across, emphasized my thought that every person is unique, has it’s own story and therefore can not be stereotyped. These works are about generalizing either personalizing the unique Muslim women I have met while living in the centre.

(With special thanks to Imane for her openness and cooperation!)

Instagram Memory Game

This Instagram memory game contains fourteen pairs in which every pair is one photo of my own and one of Imane. Imane is just like me a student living in Rotterdam. When i saw her Instagram account it was striking how many of our photo’s had the same subject or were visually comparable.  The game asks you to find resemblances but still shows a different picture. Also nowhere is written who’s photo is who’s.

Photoserie

A normal day of Imane in Rotterdam.

Coat

The coat represents the effect of the contact i have had with the Muslim girls and women. For me, something that once was vage, negative and unknown, has become more transparant and understandable. Since i am fascinated by the Moroccan design of their tiles, i used those patterns as a symbol for this process.
